Well last night I went to institute class like normal. After class there is usually refreshments that Sister and Brother Barlow make for us kids (don't you like how I used the words kids). As everyone was eating and talking, Christian mentioned a great Mexican restaurant by the Newport Beach temple. It happens to be right across from the temple in a shopping center that most people miss because it looks like it's all residential. He explained that it was this little hole in the wall place. Which in my opinion are the best places to eat. Why you may ask ? Well any place where they have grandma and grandpa cooking the food usually equals delicious food for some reason. Well this sparked a series of conversations about the best Mexican food places in Cali. David another guy from institute said Christian didn't know what good Mexican food was. With all this talk of Mexican food it made me remember a time when I went to a Mexican restaurant in Utah. I even shared this story with everyone at institute. My ex boyfriend kept go on and on about this one Mexican restaurant and how much I had to try their food. He raved about it so much that I finally let him take me there. He wanted to take me there because he wanted me to tell him how great their food was. He also figured since I'm Mexican I would be a n excellent judge for this sort of thing. So we go and I order some entree. As I ate it all I can remember was thinking to myself, "he really thinks this CRAP is good Mexican food" ? I mean Taco Time ( yes a fast food restaurant in Utah that also has awful Mexican food ) has better food than this place, and that place is not even Mexican lol. Seriously I tried Taco Time once and almost threw up. Their chile tasted like vegetable soup yuck. Thank goodness for Taco Bell I mean their not even real Mexican, but in comparison it made Taco Bell look like they were the Gods of Mexican...hahaha.
So back to this one particular restuarant. Their food tasted like it was pure aid (I don't even remember there being cheese) with lettuce thrown on top. There was no bite to it, it was just plain bland or should I say horriable. So I just pretended like it was the best thing. Then my ex boyfriend said wait you haven't tasted anything yet. Their dessert is to die for. So I'm thinking okay so they must have some really tasty flan or bread pudding. So he proceeds to tell me they have the best scones. Soon enough they bring out scones for dessert, with I kid you not butter and honey. At this point I thought to myself what the ? Now I know my family and I are Americanized Mexicans but I don't remember EVER having scones for dessert. So later that night I call my mom and I ask her about the scones dessert. She answers "Shyleen scones are not Mexican they are a English thing you have with tea". So that answered my question as to why my family never had scones after a Mexican meal hahaha.
Well at least everyone at institute got a kick out of this story, and yes I had to dump my boyfriend after he took me to a so called "Mexican restaurant" that served scones. What a funny memory of scones being a Mexican dessert...haha.. I can't even say that with a straight face. So people if you ever go to a restaurant that serves scones as a dessert and they pride themselves on authentic Mexican. The only advice I have to give is RUNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!
P.S. Lastly if you want really good Mexican fast food there is a place called El Taco (NOT DEL TACO) try it. You wont be disappointed promise. There are only 2 locations that I'm aware of one in Downey and one in Anaheim :)
7870 Florence Blvd Downey, CA 90241 ( Try their Quesadilla's you wont be dissappointed. I like their green and red sauce ones the best.)
(For some reason this one's food taste fresher to me, but both are not bad :)
